Crozet Home Experiences Fireplace Puffback and Soot Damage

The above photos show a Crozet home where this fireplace has experienced a puffback, covering the surrounding hearth in soot.

A puffback is often caused when a fire is lit and there is too much fuel and not enough oxygen in a fireplace or furnace. The extra fuel ignites quickly and with enough force to push soot out of the fireplace, often covering the surrounding areas. These conditions can be caused by improper settings of the damper or blockages in the chimney.

After recognizing the problem, our team of SERVPRO^® professionals was able to apply our Masonry Cleaner to help restore the hearth of this beautiful fireplace to preloss conditions, which you can see in the photo on the right. In the end, this customer was thrilled with the process and the appearance of the freshly cleaned fireplace.
