Fire Damage May Include a Variety of Challenges
The immediate image most of us have of fire damage is of piles of ash and smoking rubble. Fire damage can be less destructive – if we get to it early enough – and more varied.
Smoke and soot are indeed present; they do more than waft through the air, obscuring vision. The particles travel with the air currents and through the HVAC system even when the system isn’t in use. Smoke and soot are corrosive, smelly, and usually greasy. Because different materials break down at different rates, homeowners may think they have cleaned one area of smoke or soot, only to find that area dirtied again. Smoke and soot tend to travel upwards, although they also travel from warmer areas to cooler ones, which means they may end on the outsides of windows or other glass.
The heat from fires can burst sewage and other water pipes, causing massive and hazardous damage of its own. If firefighters had to suppress the fire, they probably used water too. The water tends to travel downward (opposite from the smoke and soot), but also gets absorbed upwards into porous material such as drywall or wood.
Excess water often means mold damage in addition to the substantial damage water does itself. Mold spores are unavoidable; NASA has found them even on the outside of the International Space Station (ISS). After 24 to 48 hours of exposure to water, mold spores open; the colonies eat almost everything in your house.
Our professionals are trained in the cleanup, decontamination/disinfection, and damage remediation of all these hazards. We also provide the range of restoration and building services needed to get the property back to being your home.
