Derecho of 2012 is the Worst Summer Storm in Charlottesville’s History?

Our local Charlottesville team is trained and certified to restore storm damage, no matter how extensive the damage may be. One of the worst storms to hit Charlottesville occurred on June 29, 2012, when a derecho caused severe storm damage and many deaths across nine states. Millions of people were without power for days while over 6000 workers spent a week repairing the damage to power poles and miles of powerlines. Today over 1800 miles of powerlines are buried underground to avoid these damaging winds.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) defines a derecho as a very long-lived and damaging thunderstorm with the power of a tornado that travels in a straight line. When the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles and has wind gusts of at least 58 miles per hour or greater, the storm is classified as a derecho. These powerful storms rarely make it past the Midwest region, so when this derecho hit it was unexpected and residents had little or no advanced warning.
